Cystic fibrosis not dating each other
- These days an affected person usually lives well into their 30s and beyond.
Of those who succumb, it is usually due to lung complications. Carriers do not have CF or any symptoms of the disease.
The condition is present from birth and cannot be caught from someone else who has it. You inherit one set from your mother and one set from your father.
This means they don't have cystic fibrosis themselves, but they can have a child with the condition if their partner also carries the faulty gene.
It's estimated that around 1 in every 25 people in the UK are carriers of the faulty gene that causes cystic fibrosis.
You'll need to take antibiotics and medicines to suppress your immune system to raise the chances that your body will accept the new lungs.
Several tests can help your doctor and you see how well a lung transplant or a living-donor lobar lung transplant might work.

A clinical trial involving 136 patients in the UK has demonstrated a “modest and variable” improvement in lung function without any harmful side-effects as a result of a monthly dose of gene therapy over the course of a year, doctors said.“For the first time in the world we have seen a significant benefit in giving gene therapy to cystic fibrosis patients,” said Professor Eric Alton, the co-ordinator of the UK consortium of universities and hospitals that carried out the trial.“Patients who received the gene therapy showed a significant, if modest, benefit in tests of lung function compared with the placebo group; there were no safety concerns,” Professor Alton said.“Whilst the effect was inconsistent, with some patients responding better than others, the results are encouraging, laying the groundwork for further trials which we hope could improve the effect,” he said.
